The Lev is the official currency of Bulgaria. There are approximately two Lev’s to one Euro. This rate was linked to the Euro when Bulgaria joined the EU in January 2007. Bulgaria should begin using the Euro in the next year or two, but will probably take longer. Property and other more expensive items are normally paid for in Euros.
From our experience, when travelling to Bulgaria withdraw a small amount of Lev’s from the ATM machine at the airport. As with all airports around the world, you will get a very poor exchange rate in the foreign exchange kiosks. Instead go to the high street banks. They are very friendly, helpful, efficient and much better rate of exchange. The change in Bulgaria is called Statinki, Don’t laugh because one Statinki buys far more than 0ne pence or one Euro Cent.
